The idea of a drama reunion with Miss "O" wasn't a new one. Drama groups younger than our era (1980s vs. 1970s) had a reunion in 2012. That was also the same year that the Class of '72 celebrated our 40 years. The reunion was fantastic and the committee did a stellar job with every detail. I was so happy to connect with so many old friends, many seriously involved with drama and the numerous plays we did. A lot of people told me how much they loved Miss "O" and the influence she had in their lives . I have maintained my close friendship with Helen Oretski Conroy over these past 41 years since I graduated from Soquel High. So I called Helen in Canada where she now lives with her husband Dan and told her all the comments from her former students and the idea of another reunion. Helen called and said she was planning a trip in August.  I contacted a couple of people to organize a mini-reunion. It was fairly short notice so not everyone could come, but Helen was pleasantly surprised that so many came to the event. Continue story....

George Everett Mooers, long-time Santa Cruz resident and well-known high school teacher and coach, passed away on July 24 following a short illness. He was 94.

Mr. Mooers taught at both Santa Cruz High School and Soquel High School until he retired in 1982. In addition to teaching, George coached numerous sports including lightweight football, track and field, cross-country, and wrestling. He also refereed at the historic 1962 United States-Soviet Union track meet, in which the two countries momentarily set aside Cold War tensions to compete in the largest ever two-day non-Olympic track event, held at Stanford Stadium.

Following his retirement, George began a second career at McGraw/Hill in Monterey, where he continued to utilize his passion for education. Read more about Mr. Mooers
